In this class we all (including the instructor) learn
what's new in multimedia authoring. Which explains why the class has yet
to be taught twice in the same way. Hopefully we can all glean some
fundamental insights of lasting value--but the specifics are bound to
obsolesce almost overnight. In this field, "continuing education" is a
given, and the web is probably the best conduit to ongoing learning.
So what are we focusing on this semester?
- We start again with HyperCard--because it is accessible; because
HyperTalk is the prototype of many scripting languages that came after;
and because, with Apple positioning it as the premiere
QuickTime Media Layer editor, it may still have a role to play for cross-platform
web-based development.
- We continue with Director 5--because it is still the one program
that most people think of when they think (have they nothing better to
do?) authoring; because it is definitely cross-platform; and because
with Shockwave it offers a direct outlet to the web right now.
- We conclude with miscellaneous media in web-compatible formats
packaged on an HFS CD-ROM. The list of actual media is
still being scrutinized and weeded out (it would take several semesters
just to touch on all the multimedia technologies being deployed on the
net).
