Inspecting the Spanner ball-point pen and marker drawing
The Phanteland project goes back a long way, when it was a rather different story called A Short Tail on Elephants. This is the left half of a spread meant for the front matter of the book--the title page, or possibly the endpapers. It shows realistic animal characters in a realistic savannah setting. As the project evolved, several elements featured here were dropped. Among them, the combination of landscape and fauna tied to a recognizable location. The spanner, once central to the plot, vanished as well--to be replaced by a balloon... (quite a metamorphosis, huh?!?)
