- Class activity
- Write your answer to "what's art"?
- Not what anyone told you it is, not what the teacher expects (I'll never see what you write). For guidance, try to think of your earliest experience of doing art, and how you responded.
- To avoid self-deception, put what you wrote in a sealed envelope and turn it in. You'll get it back at the end of the semester, for your final activity.
- Put your full name on the envelope (it counts for attendance).
- Write 'print' on the envelope if you need a printout of the syllabus.
- Research activity
- In the display cases in the building, find the contour-hatched figure drawings.
- For each drawing, write down the sequence of decisions taken by the artist.
- This would include the format (size and orientation of the sheet), the placement on the page,
the point of view (high above the model, low, left, right), the density of the lines (closely spaced, far apart), the darkness or lightness of the strokes, etc.
- Rank these decisions to identify the most original and the most ordinary of the drawings.
- Turn in your observations and conclusions.
- Home activity
- Read chapter 2 (pp.15-38) of the textbook
- Look at the list of creative traits at the bottom of page 20. For each one, write how it could apply (or not apply) to your profession (your major, or your current job).
- Bring your list next time you come to class.
- If you have access to the Internet, look at the online study guide for chapter 2.
