This section of the site makes available instructional material developed over the past quarter of a century.
The focus is primarily on the use of computers as visual arts tools, but you will find other topics as well,
both computer-related (basic skills, communications, programming) and art-related (storytelling, illustration, design).
Some of this work was created in various formats (including non-electronic ones) that pre-date the web.
The plan is to find ways to retain as much of the original functionality while gradually converting to web pages.
In other words, if an item in the list has no links, it's because your web browser wouldn't be able to show it to you.
And speaking of links, please note that supporting documents for some of the older classes may no longer be available.
Reports of stale links are always appreciated, but it may be impossible to replace information that evaporated out of the Internet over the years.
- Through Fall 2012: Basic Design
- Fall 2007 - Spring 2010: Intro to 3D Computer Graphics using Maya.
- Fall 2006 - Spring 2010: Advanced 3D Computer Graphics using Maya.
- Fall 2005 - Fall 2008: Intro to Art, an overview of art principles, media, and history.
- Fall 2005 - Spring 2007: overview of computer media for visual artists
(ACG100 'Introduction to Computer Graphics', formerly ACG102 'Introduction to Macintosh Graphics')
- Spring 2005, last version of this class in its original format (ACG102).
- Spring 2003: Rewrote the 3-D tutorials to use, for the first time, a freely-downloadable open-source program. Added still-image digitizing and linking to the video tutorials.
- Fall 2002: Expanded discussion of raster image editing, and 3d modeling, rendering, and animation, with the addition of several sample images. Updated Photoshop directions for version 7.0.
- Spring 2002: Linked information on QuickTime embedding. Updated directions for new software versions: Mac OS 9.2, Premiere 6.0.
- Fall 2001: Discussed proprietary and open vector file formats for the web, and software needed to distribute them. Cautioned artists about the key difference between ownership of one's work, and ownership of the means to display it. Improved descriptions of sound hardware, vector drawing, web page posting. Linked a sample rendering of a QuickTime VR file. Updated directions for new software versions: Mac OS 9.1, Photoshop 6.0.
- Spring 2001: Improved formatting using Cascading Style Sheets.
- Fall 2000: Consolidated some of the initial tutorials to make room for a final handout on web usability.
- Spring 2000: Added directions for cross-platform use of Zip disks. Changed scanner hardware to UMAX with VistaScan software. Increased audio options to include sound synthesis. As the customary 3-D program proved increasingly unstable, it became necessary to replace it with the combination of MiniCAD 7.0 and Art*lantis 3.0.
- Fall 1999: Compared the different raster file formats. Devised workaround for Strata StudioPro faulty file export. Changed video digitizer hardware to USB QuickCam. Updated directions for new software versions: Photoshop 5.0, Director 7.0, Premiere 5.0, Mac OS 8.6.
- Spring 1999: Moved all the basic user interface information in a separate handout at the beginning of the sequence. Devised workaround for creeping incompatibilities in PageMaker. Added discussion of color spaces, and color specifications on computers. Illustrated the difference between "straight-ahead" and "inbetweening" animation. Explained alternative digital sound representations. Updated directions for new software versions: FreeHand 8.0, Mac OS 8.5.
- Fall 1998: Guided the student through the creation of a basic web page by entering HTML code. Updated directions for new software versions: Director 6.5, Strata StudioPro 2.5, Mac OS 8.1.
- Spring 1998: Expanded discussion of traditional animation issues relevant to computer animators. Added a note on how a familiarity with programming may assist visual artists in their work, and in relating with other members of a development team. Expanded discussions of vector images, video editing, and 3-D rendering, with the addition of illustrations. Updated directions for version 7.6 of Mac OS.
- Fall 1997: Video recording demonstrated on a Silicon Graphics Indy workstation. This provided the opportunity to explore basic UNIX commands and TCP/IP communications. Updated Photoshop directions for version 4.0.
- Spring 1997: Completed the framework for the class, providing written tutorials for every lab session. The vector graphics program (FreeHand 7.0, replacing Illustrator 5.5) is now the object of a separate tutorial, instead of an adjunct to the 3-D tutorials (while the latter cover additional techniques). Updated directions for new software versions: Director 5, SoundEdit 2.
- Summer 1996: Radical re-design of the entire course. The aim is to give beginner students the foundation knowledge and basic hands-on experience necessary to make an informed choice before committing to time-consuming and arduous specialized classes. To this end, the scope of each project shrinks drastically, while the number of programs 'sampled' increases to encompass every major application of computer graphics in the visual arts. The emphasis is on the connections between the various programs, rather than the operational details of any one of them. The semester-long experience is further unified by collecting all media items created in a single web page 'container'.
